Chapter Twenty-Nine

“See, they’ve got waiters bringing us our drinks here,” Bat said. “That’s because it’s a men’s-only lounge.”

“And what would you do?” Clint asked. “Allow women in?”

“Oh no,” Bat said, “but I would have waitresses instead of waiters.”

“Bat,” Clint said, “a waitress is a woman.”

“I know that.”

“If you have waitresses, then it’s not men only, anymore.”

“Waitresses can come in and serve drinks to men only’1 Bat said. “It’ll still be only men who can come in here and relax. They’ll just have something pretty to look at while they’re doing it.”

“I see.”

“Don’t tell me you don’t like looking at pretty girls while you drink,” Bat said.

“I love looking at pretty girls,” Clint said, supporting his friend’s idea. “I think it’s a great idea.”

“Good,” Bat said. “I knew you would.”

“What other changes do you have in mind?”

Bat was sitting with a brandy while Clint had a beer. Bat was holding a walking stick, and had set his bowler on top of it. Clint always thought walking sticks were for people with bad legs, but Bat simply liked to carry one from time to time and—more than once—Clint had seen Bat use it to save his life, or someone else’s. Bat also made it work as a fashion statement. Clint knew few men who dressed better—or as well—as Bat Masterson.

“The men who come in here are going to have to dress better,” Bat said.

“What?”

“Look at them,” Bat said. ‘There isn’t a man in here who wouldn’t benefit from a visit to my tailor.”

“Including me?”

“You, my friend,” Bat said, “have a style all your own.”

Clint wasn’t at all sure that this was a compliment.

“So let me get this straight,” Clint said. “The men are going to have to dress better, but you’re going to have half-naked waitresses working here. Do I have that right?”

“Exactly right,” Bat said. “What do you think?”

Clint groped for the right word, then just settled for “Perfect!”

“I knew you’d back me,” Bat said, beaming.

They were still discussing possible changes when Ed Chase came to the lounge to get them.

“Have you been well taken care of?” Chase asked.

“The service has been excellent,” Clint said.

“We are a little anxious to start taking some of your money, though, Ed,” Bat said.

“Confident as ever, Bat,” Chase said, clapping Bat on the shoulder.

“Mr. Chase?”

Chase turned and faced a man wearing a tuxedo.

“Gentlemen, my head waiter, Rick.”

Rick nodded at Clint and Bat and then said to Chase, “I need to speak to you about something ... in private?”

Chase turned to Bat and Clint. “A little business. Just let me take care of it and then we’ll go up.”

“Up?” Clint asked as Chase walked away with Rick.

“Private room,” Bat said. “He’s feeling cocky, confident. That’s good.”

“How can you tell?”

“The way he slapped me on the back?” Bat said. “Very patronizing. Good ol’ Bat, as confident as ever. He thinks he’s going to take us.”

“Well, I hope we sit at the table he’s sitting at,” Clint said.

“I have an idea about that.”

“What?”

“Why should we bother to butt heads with each other?” Bat suggested.
